Autism awareness promoted through fundraising dinner
Williamsport-based group, Providing Relief for Autistic Youth, to partner with Martinsburg American Legion
April 18, 2012
By Samantha Cronk, Journal staff writer , journal-news.net

MARTINSBURG - The Williamsport, Md.-based nonprofit group Providing Relief for Autistic Youth and the Martinsburg American Legion will host a benefit dinner Saturday at the American Legion Hall with proceeds directed toward greater autism awareness and services in Berkeley County through P.R.A.Y.

"We're raising money to help get awareness programs up in the area as well as activities for our kids and training for parents and individuals that deal with the autistic community," said Trish Ieraci, P.R.A.Y. public relations representative.

Dinner guests can enjoy a meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, dessert and a beverage, as well as a cash bar, for $7.50. The event will feature live music from the Dixie Moon Band, and additional fundraising opportunities include a raffle event. Raffled items include signed "NCIS" and "NCIS: LA" pictures, a signed Nora Roberts book and tickets to the Maryland Theater.

Christina Miller, one of the event organizers and the West Virginia liaison to P.R.A.Y, wanted to be involved in the awareness benefit because her 4-year-old son, Jaedyn Rainey, is autistic, and she wanted to help educate the community on common misconceptions.

"A lot of people don't know about what autism is and they see these kids and just think they're bad, that they have behavioral problems and a lot of parents are judged. I know for the longest time with my little boy I was just afraid to go to the park because I get rude stares and rude comments," Miller said.

While there is no monetary goal for the event, Paul Turner, the American Legion representative, hopes the event will raise several thousand dollars and be the first of many awareness events to help Eastern Panhandle families and residents.

"The state has next to no services, if any at all, over on this side of the state for autism or autistic children," Turner said.

Tickets for the event can be preordered by contacting the American Legion at 304-267-6100 or purchased the night of the event.

03/06/2012 4:30 PM Maryland Law Enforcement CEU Approved

We received notice today that our April 19, 2012 Autism Awareness Training has been approved by Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions for a total of 5 hours of CEU for Law Enforcement Officers.

This training has been approved for West Virginia Law Enforcement Officers in 2011 when Dennis Debbaudt provided this training in Wheeling, WV.

We are currently working to see what we need to do for Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Officers.

02/09/2012 2:00 PM Maryland General Assembly House Bill 361 UPDATE

We received this notice about the HB361 from Senator Shank's Office toady, we are very pleased with the outcome that the emergency service agencies voluntarily recognizances the need for the training of all emergency service providers to receive Autism Awareness Training without a State Law that would require them to provide this training. Below is the notice that we would like to share with everyone on the outcome of the HB361.

Colleagues,
I hope you are doing well. I am excited to write today to let you know that I am withdrawing HB361 - Public Safety - Autism Awareness Training Program. Over the past many months, I’ve worked together with:
· The Health & Government Operations Committee,
· Mr. Steve Edwards (Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute),
· Mr. Tom Williams (Maryland State Police),
· Ms. Rhea Harris (Maryland Department of Public Safety & Corrections),
· Ms. Patricia Gainer (Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems), and
· Other various stakeholders,
to see if this bill can be implemented by regulation. This approach would permit the most flexibility necessary for our strong first responder community to be trained and ready to respond to any emergency situation now and in the future.
Last evening I received final notice that all of the aforementioned agencies are on board, nullifying the need for this bill. I commend everyone involved in this process and the various State agencies for identifying a problem and proactively working to resolve it before it came to Maryland.

Please see the attached press release for more information. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

It is a humbling honor to be able to work with all of you for the People of Maryland. May you and your loved ones always be blessed.

Sincerely,

Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk
